Sōlful Eats: N'awlins Baby
Why Hello There Sōlmates,
I'm still running off of fumes from my recent voyage to the Big Easy - New Orleans, Louisiana and I just had to share the experience with you all. From the moment my girlfriends and I touched down in the lively city, we were immediately greeted by friendly faces and vibrant scenery. Walking through Canal Street admiring the rainbow of homes and people, it was such awe inspiring experience. Despite the eclectic mix of faces, everyone welcomed me with open arms, I felt at home.
Much like the vibrant homes throughout NOLA, the food was just as captivating. Creole and cajun dishes are the primary meal of choice in this city. Here you'll find the most authentic gumbo, crawfish boils, jambalaya, étouffée - the list goes on and on. If you're ever in the mood for sōlful dishes with tantalizing flavors and an amazing backdrop, New Orleans is definitely the place to go.
Since I had such a great time in the bayous of Louisiana, I wanted to comprise a list of my favorite restaurants for you all. Check out some of my suggestions below!
The Gumbo Shop
Location: 630 Saint Peter St, New Orleans, LA 70116
- Blackened Fish Nuggets (Appetizer)
- A Taste of New Orleans (Entree - not advertised on the menu)
Review: I absolutely LOVED The Gumbo Shop. It's a quaint and cozy restaurant with large windows looking out into the street. The menu is full of tasty items but my two faves have to be the Blackened Fish Nuggets and A Taste of New Orleans. The nuggets are covered with creole seasoning and a hint of spicy mustard and ginger, they're AMAZING! The Taste of New Orleans is exactly what it sounds like, a taste of three of NOLA's most prized dishes: crawfish étouffée, seafood gumbo and jambalaya. This entree is the restaurant's BEST kept secret. Now I can't tell you exactly how I found out about this delicious dish but let's just say my sources NEVER disappoint. The way these three entrees perfectly fuse together to make an utterly delectable meal, it's just something you have to try. I'm serious sōlmates, it's so good you'll refuse to share!
Location: 601 Frenchman St., New Orleans, LA 70116 (Note: There are two other locations in NOLA)
- Crawfish Dog
- Guinness Dog
Review: If you are ever in NOLA and traveling near or through Frenchman St. Dat Dog is a must visit. Now I know you are probably thinking that if you've had one hot dog, you've had them all, but you're wrong! This isn't your regular dog spot, Dat Dog has risen the bar to a new level. Take for instance, their Crawfish Étouffée dog. It's comprised of crawfish sausage topped with a house made crawfish étouffée, sour cream, creole mustard, onions and fresh tomatoes. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! The Guinness Dog is just as delicious. Topped with andouille sauce, cheese, bacon and onions. What's not to love? I've never experienced dogs quite like these in my life and once you get a taste, you'll know why I'm raving about this place!
Café du Monde
Location: 800 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA 70116
Review: A beignet is a fried piece of dough covered in powdered sugar. If you want beignets, you go to Cafe du Monde. That's it. It's just one of those things that you have to do; like a right of passage almost. The wait might be a little long but it's worth it. And with beignets priced at 3 for $4 , you can't pass them up!
New Orleans is bursting with culture, energy and the most amazing creole dishes. If you call yourself a foodie or just enjoy delicious meals, make sure you make plans to travel to NOLA in the near future. Your taste buds will thank you!
